This uninterrupted study of the breath, followed by intuitive awareness of prana through sound forms is called “breath-sensitivity culture” by Sri Prashant Iyengar.

The Sanskrit word pranayama has been translated as such and is composed of:

Prana: breath of life, all vibrating energies and entities, that what infinitively IS, aliveness…

Ayama: prolongation, extension, regulation, control and restraint of breath.

Pranayama is the 4th aspect of the 8 interrelated limbs of Astanga Yoga, defined by Sri Patanjali in the Yoga Sutras II.49-52. The Yoga Chudamani Upanishad authenticates that there is no higher discipline than pranayama. It is the royal road to well-being, freedom and bliss.

”It destroys illusion, consisting of ignorance, desire and delusion which obscure intelligence and allows the inner light of wisdom to shine”. (Guruji, B.K.S Iyengar)

The health benefits of a regular pranayama practice are incredibly high; through regulation of the breath we increase the volume of the lungs so more oxygen can enter the bloodstream; it strengthens the immune system and is influential on high and low blood pressure; through a longer and deeper exhalation we purify our systems, improvements in your asana practice find quickly evidence. The practice on the subtleties soothes the nerves and the nervous system; we sensitize the breath for an insightful contact with our body, emotions, psyche and spirituality.

Relaxation and a sense of well-being are the positive outcomes of thoughtful, no greedy breathing skills. The analyzing frontal brain is pacified, the fluctuations of the mind diminish and an increasing wakefulness of the spiritual element of our being shines forth.

Please join this class to explore and benefit from these ancient techniques.

What: Philosophy of the Bhagavad Gita
    Instructor: Anirudh Shastri
Price: $30 per lecture or $50 for both lectures
    Dates and Time: Sunday, October 10th 3:00pm - 4:30pm
    Sunday, November 7th 3:00pm- 4:30pm

The Bhagavad Gita is one of the most important and revered Hindu scriptures. It is considered as one of the most important philosophical classics of the world. The Bhagavad Gita comprising 700 verses, is a part of the Mahabharata. The teacher of the Bhagavad Gita is Krishna who is regarded as the supreme manifestation of the Lord Himself, and is referred to within as Bhagavan the divine one.

The content of the Gita is the conversation between Krishna and Arjuna taking place on the battlefield before the start of Kurukshetra war. Responding to Arjuna's confusion and moral dilemma, Krishna explains to Arjuna his duties as a warrior and prince and elaborates on different Yogic philosophies. This has led to the Gita often being described as a concise guide to Hindu philosophy and also as a practical, self-contained guide to life. During the discourse, Krishna reveals his identity as the Supreme Being Himself (Syayam bhagavan), blessing Arjuna with an awe-inspiring vision of his divine universal form.

Shastri is a well-known and highly respected yoga instructor with an extensive background in yoga philosophy. He has been teaching yoga for more than 20 years, bringing his deep knowledge of the physical and spiritual aspects of yogic philosophy to his many students on the peninsula and in the South Bay. Shastri trained in India and studied under the guidance of Shri Vishnu Prasadji.

Come enjoy this in-depth discussion regarding the Bhagavad Gita with one of Northern California's best philosophy teachers, Shastri.

The first lecture in this fall series on the Bhagavad Gita is on 'Pity and Compassion'.

What: Experience the Legacy -Teacher(s) to Student
    Instructor: Ben Thomas
Price: $55 if prepaid or $65 at the front door
    Dates and Time: Saturday, October 23th 1:30pm - 4:30pm

“The Teacher, The Student, The Knowledge Should All Become One” - BKS Iyengar

The legacy of the teacher to and through the students is not only the actuality of the relationship, it is also the Blessings passed on through the sequential line of teachers to the student in the form of knowledge – to be refined, confirmed, and applied to new experiences; then it becomes wisdom.

The Teacher initially leads, teaches, and guides the student; later on, the teacher says less while guiding and stands beside the student; further on in time, given the continuing development and maturity of the teacher and the student, the Blessing and Legacy, the embodiment of the knowledge, then they all become one. The living legacy at the student carries forward is also evident through inspiration, encouragement, courage, will power, facing challenges, tolerance and understanding others and the self. The list goes on.

Those of you who have studied with me in the recent past recognize the effective technique, while practicing yoga, of focusing on a mental thought or concept; then during the practice, experience the impact of the mind’s thought on the outcome of the practice.

The concept of The Legacy and Blessings of our varied Teachers will be the ever-present conscious thoughts in this class.

The class begins with an Opening Ritual, moves to the body of the class, and ends with a Closing Ritual.
